In these verses, we see a call to be
deeply devoted to the Word of God. The place to begin in such a devotion is the
heart. Firstly, it tells us that coming to the
Word and keeping it must also be a life-long thing. Hence, we are exhorted not
to forget the teaching. Secondly, we are called to “…let your (our) heart keep my commandments.” The
word “let” tells us that to do so devotedly, our will must be involved. It is making
a decision and being committed to that decision. A half-hearted commitment will
never be able to sustain that devotion. Only a wholehearted commitment will
keep us fervent and dedicated to the Word. In verse 2, shows us two benefits of
true devotion to the Word. One will not only have longevity of life but also peaceful
existence. It is a promise of both quantitative and qualitative of life. The Word of God must not only be remembered it
must be faithfully applied.
Truth and lovingkindness always go hand in hand. John
1:17 reminds us that. It says “For the Law was given through Moses; grace
and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.” The Law given by Moses was truth without grace. But in
Jesus we see the truth and grace bound together. This is what verse 3 is saying
too. We need the truth but we also need grace. Wisdom has both these elements. We
must keep them ever before us to remind us to live truthfully and graciously. The
end result is a good reputation and favor before God and man.
Proverbs
3:5-6 provide the first thing we need to relate wisely with God. We must trust
Him with all our heart. This is a call to trust God entirely. We need to give
Him undivided devotion and truth. Not only must we trust Him entirely, we must
also trust him exclusively. By that it means that we do not lean on our own understanding.
We consider God in our decision making. Then we are also to trust God extensively.
In all our ways we must acknowledge Him. We acknowledge Him in every aspect of
life, be it in church, at home, at work or at play. We put God at the centre of all our
activities. His truth must be brought to bear in every activity and every aspect
of life. When He is the Lord of all our life, we will have His guidance throughout
our life’s journey. What a privilege!
