Proverbs are wise and short expressions. And every culture has its own set
of proverbs. They are generally gleaned from the observation
of life and the world. And they come as advises
on what attitudes one ought to cultivate and adopt to experience success in life.
The Bible has a whole book that contains proverbs. If there is
one book that we need to study to achieve true success it must be this Book of Proverbs.
Unlike many proverbs found in other cultures, Biblical proverbs set a different
measure and paradigm of success. Plainly and clearly, the Book of Proverbs tells
us that success is found in living wisely in the fear of the Lord. It guides us
to live a life that counts. In this book we are given insights on how to be
successful in every aspect of life – in attitude, in disciplines, in career, in
fulfilling relationships, in marriage, in raising children and etc.
The uniqueness of Biblical proverbs is because it is rooted
in the covenant relationship with the Lord God. They are not just clever
sayings but are wise teachings set to lead us to a right relationship with others.
And most importantly a right relationship with God, the source of true wisdom.
Solomon is thought to be the author of this book. They contain
in parts some recollections of the counsels his father David gave to him. Beyond
the wisdom of Solomon found in this book, we can see Jesus Christ, the Wisdom
of God, personified. Through our relationship with Christ, we pray that we
shall find the strength to live the wisdom which we will discover in our
meditation of this book. Our desire is to see Christ through the pages of the Book
of Proverbs.
As we begin our journey in this book, bear in mind
that some chapters contain varied subjects given rapidly and successively. We may
have to deal with the contents topically in those instances rather than going
through them verse by verse. Be aware also that primarily, this book was written
to men. However, the reality is that the truths and principles found here are equally
applicable to women. Whether we are young or old, we need to
apply the truth in this book. If we are young, it will challenge us to face our
next phase of life i.e. adulthood responsibly. If we are parents, we will find
rich resources on what to do to raise godly children. To the young and simple,
about to start out in life, it has many guidelines to meaningful and fruitful living.
To those seeking to be wise, this book is imperative. And to those who are
disciplined and walking wisely, this book will deepen our understanding. Knowing
and applying the truths discovered can prevent us from walking and meandering on
the fool’s highway, leading to arrogance and rebelliousness. Brace up for the
journey!
