Proverbs 2:10-22 – Wisdom guards us against evil influence and immorality

These verses show us what impact wisdom will have on a person that possesses it. When wisdom has entered a person’s heart, it will set his attitude right. His soul will be delightfully blessed with knowledge. Wisdom will give him the capacity to act and live with discretion and understanding and be preserved from false ways. Wisdom is necessitated because of the threats a young man will face from two fronts. First, he has to battle the influence of evil man. Secondly, he has to confront the enticement of strange woman.

The evil man is a proud man. He walks with pride in his heart and is totally devoid of any reliance on God. Such a person also speaks perverse things, seeking to influence the simple and uninitiated, luring them into the paths of unrighteousness. If followed on, the perverse talk of the evil man will also entice him to walk in the ways of darkness and duplicity. On the other hand, God’s truths will guide him to wise walk. They are set to deliver the simple from a self-absorbed life, empowering them to avoid warped and perverse paths.

One person we will find flitting in and out of the pages of proverbs is the strange woman. Who exactly is she? What’s her intention? What was Solomon showing concerning this strange woman? More than a symbol of impurity and uncleanness, this strange woman speaks of immorality and contradicting virtues. She is also referred to here as an adulteress. We see the description of a woman devoid of propriety who nefariously traffic her body and soul to the unwary young. She is one who had forgotten her marital covenant, forsaken her pledge to faithfulness and given herself up to impure desires and soul-destroying hankers. Pursuing after strange woman leads to the way of death. But for the mercy and grace of God, one who is ensnared and fallen into her path will find it hard to recover. The ravage and cost of an illicit relationship is incalculable. So, take a word from the wise, avoid her at all cost.

Wisdom when attained will empower us to walk in God’s good and righteous path. They help us to live life with great moral purity, basking in the promises of God. Wisdom attained empowers us to live life responsibly, guarding our life with the Word of God. It is a great comfort to know when we seek to walk in divine wisdom, we choose the path of blessings. Our temporal needs on earth will be met and we will be walking in divine privilege. Best of all we will find the abiding presence and favour of our Heavenly Father. So, pursue wisdom!
