Proverbs 2:1-9 - To seek wisdom earnestly

A person with wisdom will experience many benefits. This is the assurance given by God through Solomon in this second chapter. Therefore, like digging for precious gems, a person who desires to have wisdom has to pursue her. The logic is simple. Just as earthly treasures that have to be mined and excavated, the wisdom and knowledge of God must be sought after diligently. One who desires to be rich in them must diligently read, study, memorise, meditate on the Word of God. And it is comforting to note that the treasures of the Word of God are not designed only for the scholarly or a highly academic person. Any Christian with an earnest, thirsting and searching heart will be able to discover precious truths of God from His Word, with the help of the Holy Spirit. Bear in mind that it’s not the well-furnished mind but the condition of one’s soul that will determine one’s receptivity to the Word of God.

These verses tell us the posture we need to adopt if we want to lay hold of God and His wisdom. We cannot expect to be fruitfully blessed if we just read His Word casually and carelessly. If we expect to encounter God and His truth, the posture describes in verses 2-4 must be adopted. Our ears must be attentive and our heart must be yearning. Here we see the whole being called to be devoted to searching for truth. As a man looking for silver would put in diligent effort in his digging, so also must a man seeking wisdom of God put in the diligent effort of studying and searching. He must not be content with mere surface findings. He must make the effort to dig deep into the Word of God. Earnest effort must be applied in the seeking and searching for the truth. Jesus Himself promises in Matthew 7:7-8 saying, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.

When wisdom is acquired, one will have a proper relationship with Jehovah God. And a proper relationship with Him will make the fear of the Lord discernible, and will ensure the experience of His awesome excellence. Personal and intimate knowledge of God are always enhanced through meaningful relationship and fellowship. It is undeniable that God is the source of all wisdom and He gives to all who earnestly seek Him. The wisdom talk about here is not knowledge to keep us informed but to keep us empowered. It guarantees that we will be enabled to live life with integrity and wholeness. It will guide, guard and preserve us in God’s righteous way.  Let’s go for it!
