The strength
of our life is very dependant on how we live it. Those who thoughtfully live it
learn to seize every day to ensure that it is better than the previous one. But
those who are careless do not have such a habit. They tend to squander their
life through reckless living. There is no forethought, and honestly speaking, they
couldn’t care even if the result is evidently clear. As believers of Christ, how
do we make the most out of life? What can we do to live an impactful life?
Proverbs 16:31-33 offer us three ways to have an effective life.
Firstly,
we must have perspective and be forward looking. Remember the journey of a thousand
miles begin with the first step. Therefore, one must learn to start by
envisaging the end. With the end goal in mind we become more vigilant in the way
we conduct our life. We must be sure to engage in activities that are God-guided,
Word-centred, purpose-driven, and time-tested. When we do that we align our
relationship with God and cultivate righteousness. The crux of this verse is
not just about the length of a person’s life but a life that is lived with honour.
There are old people who may live long life but they are the scorn of the
community. It is more important to be righteous in life for with it we will be well-regarded.
Secondly,
we must gain self-mastery. Being able to control one’s inner strength is more
superior than physical strength. It is said that private victory always
precedes public one. If we cannot lead ourselves, it is certain that we cannot
lead others. It is more important to harness our inner strength. Galatians 5:23
indicates that self-control is one of the fruits of a Spirit-filled, Spirit-led
life. When we have ruled our spirit we have won a greater victory than
capturing a city.
Thirdly,
we must look up to God. Verse 33 says, “The dice are thrown, but the Lord
determines every outcome.” In other words, God always has the final say in
life. We have the freedom of choice in life, because we are made with the
capacity to think and to decide what we want. But we cannot determine the outcome,
that’s the result of the choice we make. It is true that in the moment of
decision, our destiny is shaped. Therefore, we must look upward to God. Destiny
has nothing to do with chance, but choice. When we are connected to God and
make godly choices in line with His purpose and will, we are in effect shaping
our eternal destiny. Remember, to be effective we must not only be forward looking
but also must be inward looking, and most importantly, we must be upward looking.
