The purpose of Psalm 113 was
written to praise the glorious God. But we do now know who the author is. Thus
it is also one of the 50 Psalms that was anonymously written. Collectively, Psalms
113 to 118 is known as the “Hallel” or praise Psalms. The “Hallel” was known to
be sung at the Feasts of the Passover, Pentecost and Tabernacle and also at the
Feast of Dedication and at the New Moons. The “Hallel” was sung in two parts at
the Feast of the Passover. Before the Passover meal, Psalms 113-114 would be
sung and after the meal Psalms 115-118 would be sung.
In the first three verses, the Psalmist
began with an exhortation to praise the glorious God. So wonderful and high is this
God that there should be no end to praising Him. From the beginning of time
till forevermore praise should be offered to Him. The same should be done from morning
to night. In the morning when the sun rises to the evening when the sun set,
praise is due Him. God’s name should forever be praised!
Verses 4-9 give reason why praises
should be offered endlessly to Him. Verses 4-6 say, He is to be praised for
who He is. For He is high above the nations and is exalted gloriously in
heaven, far above all His creation. He is enthroned on high and there is
absolutely no one like Him. Yet this
great and high God would condescend to examine and mingle with us
earthlings. In verses 7-9, the Psalmist says, He should be
praise for the works He had done. He had compassion toward the low and needy
and took care of their needs. And He also opened the womb of the barren. The
Jews consider it a great blessings to be able to conceive a child. It is seen
as a divine blessing.
How often do we find time to praise
the Lord? Some people do it only on Sunday. Others do it a bit more frequently,
maybe they add times when they gather as in small group fellowship or during
prayer meeting nights. Do we find time in our private moments each day to praise
Him? Remember the Psalmist say we are to
praise Him forever, day and night. Let’s us cultivate an attitude of praise. We
are called to rejoice evermore! And in everything to give thanks for this is
the will of God concerning us His own!
