Psalm 110 - Christ is both King and Priest

Psalm 110 is a Messianic Psalm written by David. In Matthew 22:43-45, we see the Lord Jesus Himself using this Psalm to affirm the Davidic authorship. This Psalm was quoted extensively by the New Testament writers. The Lord Jesus, the writers of all the four Gospels, and even the author of the letter to the Hebrews quoted from it.  There is no doubt that this Psalm speaks about the ministry and reign of Jesus as King and Priest. Here we see the exaltation of the reign of Jesus the Messiah King.

The author shows without a doubt that Jesus Christ was David’s LORD. Matthew 22:42-45 tell us that He was both David’s Lord as well as His son. This affirms the fulfillment of God’s promise that the Messiah would hail from David’s line. This Psalm reveals the reign of Christ. (1) He will be exalted and sit at God’s right hand to co-reign with the Sovereign God. (2) His reign will be executed from Zion. (3) His rule will be accomplished among His enemies. (4) The author also reveals He will conquer with the help of Jehovah as well as His people, who will volunteer their services to Him.

Verse 4 clearly tells us that Christ is both King and Priest. Making reference to Melchizedek, the king and priest first referred to in Genesis, the author affirmed Christ as King and Priest. In verses 5-7, David tells us the war He, the Messiah King will be engaged in and the victory He will secure. Verse 6 divulges that He will execute judgment upon the heathen and subjugate their rulers. In verse 7, David in this Psalm tells us that this Messiah King will be refreshed by heaven itself.

Jesus is our Lord and King. He is also our ever existing Priest. Just think of how honoured we are to be enlisted into the company of His redeemed people. As we continue to connect with Him, let’s remember to worship Him faithfully, obey Him resolutely, serve Him diligently, and proclaim Him continually!
