Psalm 105 - Keep faith with God

Psalm 105 traces the history of the people of Israel, beginning from Abraham. It was a recollection of God’s gracious dealings with the nation of Israel. Through it God’s faithfulness to His people becomes obvious and clear. The Psalmist began with a call to the descendants of Abraham to give thanks and praise the Lord God. They should sing, and tell of His wonders. They were extolled to make known all that He had done among them and to continually seek Him, His strength and His face, meaning His presence. One way to ensure a constant stream of praises is to remember all that He had done.
Verses 7-41 gave reasons why the people of God should gloriously praise and laud Him. Tracing the way this gracious God dealt with them in the past, the Psalmist showed how good God was to the nation of Israel. With Abraham, God first made an unconditional covenant, and later enforced it with Isaac and then with Jacob, whose name was changed to Israel. Then He raised up Joseph, one of the sons of Israel to protect and sustain His people in Goshen in the land of Egypt. When they were organised into bondage, He delivered them through the hand of Moses and Aaron by sending the mighty plagues upon stubborn Pharaoh and the Egyptians. He also took out all the firstborns of Egypt so that Israel would be set free from bondage. And while they were on the journey into the Promised Land, He sustained them with supernatural food, and guided them miraculously by the cloud by day and fire by night. And throughout the journey He assisted them with His help, and they overtook kings and nations. All these wonderful deeds were attributed to the graciousness of God upon Israel, His people.

The Psalmist reveals that God brought them out of bondage, sustained them in the wilderness and gave them the Promised Land for a specific reason. That is that they might “…keep His statutes and observe His laws.” Above everything God values obedience. Recollection of the goodness of God will not only lead one to obedience but also to praise Him. One way for us today to stay faithful to God is to make time to think about His grace and goodness. Think of those moments that He had faithfully saw us through. Yes, we must continually seek His presence as we journey through this life. He will be found by those who diligently seek Him. He never fails!
