When
David learned from Ziba that Jonathan had a surviving but crippled son, he
asked that he be brought before him. In trepidation, Mephibosheth came before
the king expecting death. But David not only spared him but also generously
restored to him the status of a prince. He was given the status as a son of
David and given the privilege to feast at his table regularly. Besides
according that honor to him, David also returned to him all the property that
once belonged to Saul, his grandfather. And Ziba, who once served Saul was made
to serve Mephibosheth and steward his property. As the steward, he was
instructed to cultivate his master’s land and bring in all the harvest to
sustain his master’s household. Ziba gave his word that he would take care of
all that David had instructed. He himself had a large household of 15 sons and
twenty servants. Verse 12 tells us that Mephibosheth also had a son by the name
of Mica who was entrusted to his care. So, he lived with Ziba. As for
Mephibosheth, he lived in Jerusalem and ate at David’s table
regularly.
Every Christian shares the story of Mephibosheth.
We are all restored to God through Christ our Savior, the Lord, and King. Like
Mephibosheth, God picked us up and restored us to the status of a prince. We
are princes and princesses of God in Christ Jesus. Today, each one of us shares
the privilege of being seated with our Lord and King in heavenly places. This
is what the Apostle Paul tells us in Ephesians 2:4-6. He assured us that God
had mercifully made us alive with Christ,
raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places.
If we fail to see our position in Christ, we may continue to live in the
valley of our old carnal nature. No longer do we need to live a spiritually
impoverished life. So don’t live life as a spiritual cripple. Our position is
up there in the heavenly places. In a very real sense, we need to get used to
sitting up there in our privileged position. As we sit and spend time with
Jesus, we make time to be sanctified and become more spiritual. In
sanctification, we become more and more like Christ. In spirituality, we will
behave more and more like Christ. These can only take place when we habitually
sit with Christ. Do not neglect our daily appointment with Him. We need it so
that we can become like Him and so to behave like Him.
