The words Samuel told Saul was
devastating. They were not new but words that he had told him earlier. Samuel
reiterated two key things he had said to him earlier. Firstly that God had
rejected him as king. Secondly that the Lord had
torn the kingdom out of his hand and had given it to David. Samuel further
reminded Saul how it all started. He had disobeyed the Lord regarding the
Amalekites and did not carry out as he was instructed. Finally, he told Saul
that he and Jonathan would be joining death that night. As soon as he heard
those words, he fell full length upon the ground and was very afraid and was
drained of the last strength he had; because he did not eat a thing all day or
night. And his entire appetite left him.
The once macho Saul was now cowering in fear. He refused to eat.
The only help available to him came from the medium and his servants who
brought him to En-dor. They all urged him to eat something, but he refused. At
their coaxing, he finally got up and sat on the bed. The medium then
slaughtered her calf, took some flour, kneaded it and baked unleavened bread. She then
brought the food she had prepared before Saul and his servants and they
ate. After they had eaten, they arose and went away that night. When he left
the medium, it was night indeed. All hope was gone.
These few verses underscore the danger of not listening to
God. Saul landed
where he was because of disobedience. Despite opportunity after opportunity God
gave to him to re-align, he spurned them all. It is one thing to know what God
has said and quite another to put it into practice. Every part of our journey
in life is moving towards the final point. Saul made many wrong moves, hence he
progressed to where he was. Saul’s life tells us that if we are to end our life
realizing our hope in God, there is a necessity to find God’s mind and align
with it. There is no other way!
