Isaiah 51:1-3 – Feel overwhelmed? Return to Christ the Rock

In the last two verses of the previous chapter, God called on them to be patient even though what they were experiencing seemed bleak. They were encouraged to hold on even if the darkness they were experiencing seemed prolonged. God assured them of His ability to deliver them. Remember the people were in despondency and God was seeking to help them see light, to overcome their despair, and turn to trust Him. In Isaiah 51:1-3, we can see that among them were those who would pursue righteousness and seek after the Lord. So in these three verses, God continued to comfort them.

Speaking to them, God directed them to look at their origin. Referring to Abraham, God told them that the patriarch was the rock from whom they were dug. Besides, they were also the offspring of barren Sarah, who had conceived and bore them in pain. God’s rationale is this: if He could raise a nation from one man and his barren wife, would He not have the capacity to raise something beautiful from the ruin of their lives? Of course, He could, and He would.

Here, God promised to restore all their ruin and turn their wasteland into something like Eden with its beautiful garden. And He would restore their joy and gladness, and thanksgiving and celebration would once again abound. The people of Israel originated from Abraham. For us, our spiritual life originates with Christ Jesus. He is the Rock where our spiritual life is hewed from. God’s assurance is that there is nothing He cannot and will not do for us. And there is also no circumstance in our lives too bleak that He cannot restore. When we are overwhelmed return to Christ, the Rock of our salvation. As we do, pick up the broken pieces of our lives and place them in His hand. He will make something beautiful out of them. That is His specialty, and He will do it!
