Isaiah 25:9-12 – Don’t let pride derail our life

Isaiah had said that the Lord will host a grand banquet on Mount Zion. The people who had waited for His salvation were not disappointed. The faithful God whom they trusted and waited, affirmed their trust and had saved them indeed. Hence, they confessed their faith in Him and called for all to rejoice in that salvation. Verse 10 affirmed that it was the hand of Yahweh who had brought about this salvation on this mountain.

The second part of verse 10 specifically mentioned Moab. It was a timely reminder of the negative effect of pride. Moab is used here as a symbol of pride. Like Moab, pride would be trampled down and humiliated. Here Isaiah described pride as a person swimming in a pool filled with dung. Moab had prided herself as a fortified city. As well fortified as she might think she was, yet she could not protect herself from the LORD’s dealings.

It is true that God’s grace is offered and available to all. But those who, like prideful and arrogant Moab, reject the offer of grace would have to suffer the consequences. This is a call for us not to be proud. We should not presume on our own ability to save ourselves and be like Moab that depended on its high fortified walls. It would be foolhardy to rely on our own strength when God had made available His grace to see us through. Let us draw near to God and He will draw near to us. This is His wonderful promise!
