2 Samuel 3: 17-21 – Better late than never

Abner began to work out his plan to transfer the house of Israel to David. He consulted with the elders of Israel and recounted to them how they had always wanted David to be their king in the past. He then reiterated to them of the promise God had made concerning David. He reminded them of what God said that “By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel from the hand of the Philistines, and from the hand of all their enemies.” All along Abner knew God’s will for David but his personal ambition had prevented him from acting in consult with Him. Similarly, we too could fall into the same trap as he. We may know of God’s direction for our lives and ministry, but personal ambition could negate it. When we act in accordance with God’s will, many needless hurts can be avoided. Let’s learn to obey God and not resist His will.

Having convinced the elders of Israel, Abner also spoke to the house of Benjamin. This was needful because Saul was from the tribe of Benjamin. Hence, he had to make sure that the people of Benjamin were also in agreement. When the consensus of the elders of Israel and the people of Benjamin had been secured, Abner then went to Hebron to convey the good news. David was welcoming of Abner’s action and even held a feast for him and his delegate of twenty men. The deal was done, and it was left to Abner to complete the process. He pledged to get all the people of Israel together to sign a covenant to hand over the reign of all of Israel to David. Then he and his delegate were sent home peacefully.

It is never too late to do what we know is right, especially when we know it is the will of God. Better late than never is a good attitude to adopt concerning doing the right thing. To do so may require us to set aside pride. But it is better to be right than to be stubborn. Abner had at least come to his senses and was ready to make amend for his mistake. Are there things we know we should do but have been delaying? Remember, it is never too late to start making amends. Knowing the right thing is not enough, we need to apply. Similarly, being willing is also inadequate, we must start to do. So do it, it is better late than never!
