John 5:31-36 –John, the Baptist and miracles of Christ validate His claims

Christ had made three claims saying He and the Father are one in action, and He is the giver of life and He will eventually come as judge. And although what He said of Himself are irrefutable and we all know they are truly unassailable, yet in these six verses, He provides us with two avenues that easily mediate His claims.

The first is the testimony of John the Baptist, who spoke the truth concerning Him. But as human, his testimony concerning Christ was not of ultimate importance. Yet his testimony, though a human channel, was effective. Those who believed him were brought into salvation. He was like a lamp that gave light for a while, and those who had listened to him had the privilege of enjoying some light. We must recognize that today, human testimony of what Christ had done for their life, is still important. Over the years we have heard of testimonies of people who had helped to lead others to Christ. It is important that we stand up for Christ in our workplaces and testify of Him boldly. We cannot underestimate the potential of our testimony.

The second channel that authenticated the claims of Christ was the miracles He did. Here in John’s Gospel, he called them signs. These miracles bear more weight than the Baptist’s testimony. To me, the greatest miracle had to be His death and resurrection. It’s hard to think that a God who cannot die, yet died in our place. And the miracle of miracles is that death could not hold Him down. He thwarted the sting of death and became our Risen Lord. Hallelujah!

We cannot even measure the impact and magnitude of His miracles down through the centuries. He has been around all over the world since. He has been reaching the lost, inspiring the saved, up-lifting the downcast, healing the sick, comforting the distress and guiding and leading those who had acknowledged His Lordship. These works eloquently speak of our incomparable Christ. They authenticate the claims that He had made. How privileged we are to know Him and to be known by Him. The things we say and the way we live our life can also authenticate the reality of His existence in our life. Let’s live for Him!
