In
verse 12 Paul said that he would continue with his policy of bringing the word
without requiring the Corinthians to support him financially. For those critics
of Paul claimed to be operating on the same principle as him. Paul brought this
up to prove that there was no truth in their claim because they accepted money.
Paul than used this chink in their armor to expose their falsehood, calling
them false apostles.
First,
he said they were deceitful workers. This word deceitful describes a person who
hides his hook with a bait. Once the victim bites the bait, it would be caught
by the hook. Similarly, underneath the smooth speeches of these false apostles
were hooks. When victims swallowed their false teachings, they would also be
caught by their hooks.
Second,
he said that they disguised themselves. The word used here is masquerade. It means
to change only the outer form. The false apostles would put on an outward show but
inwardly they had not changed a wee bit. Like Satan who masqueraded himself as
an angel of light, these false apostles also appeared as “servants of
righteousness.” And finally, Paul said that they would end up in destruction.
This
underscores the importance of studying, understanding and knowing God’s Word. It
will help us to evaluate teachings to prove their authenticity. We need to do
this because our world is invaded by all kinds of teaching by people
masquerading as God’s servants. Knowing the word will help us to discern the
bait of Satan.
