Ezekiel 16:30-34 – Loving the Lord passionately.

Ezekiel 16:30-34 describes how outraged God was with Jerusalem. She had become extremely blatant in her harlotry. With an insatiable appetite she wildly pursued illicit relationships like a nymphomaniac. So uncontrollable was her lust that she freely gave herself to one client after another. As the beloved of the Lord, Israel had no need to prostitute herself. A prostitute would provide sexual services to earn her keep supporting herself. Yet Jerusalem was doing it at will. God’s charge against her was that she had become an unfaithful and adulterous wife.

What was unusual about Jerusalem's harlotry was that she was not being paid for providing service. She was offering herself freely to others. What’s worse, in her illicit relationship, she was offering gifts to her clients to invite them to have a fling with her. Unwittingly, she had despised the Lord, her faithful spouse. This was a demonstration of her preference for a stranger over the Lord, her own beloved husband.

A passage like this tells us that there is a need for us to watch over our passion. If we don’t guard our hearts with diligence, we will find our love for the Lord slowly eroding. When our passion for the Lord is eroding, we find ourselves pursuing the fleeting pleasures of life. In 1 John 2:15, God admonishes us saying, “Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” Remember, what captures our hearts captures us. So, we must keep our focus on the Lord so that all else in life will fade into the shadow of our love for Him.
