In the first
five verses 0f Jeremiah 10, the prophet described the gods that the pagan
worshipped and served. They were wooden handmade dumb idols decorated with
silver and gold. For them not to totter over, they were fastened with nails to
hold them up. And they are like scarecrows that farmers put in the cucumber
field to scare away birds. So powerless were they that they could not move
about by themselves but had to be carried and ferried from place to place. Yet
the people of Judah would emulate the pagans and venerate them. How foolish
could they be to worship such dumb idols that could not be compared with the
awesome God who had delivered them?
Jeremiah in chapter 10 and
verses 6-7 then went began by praising this incomparable God. Exclaiming that
there is no one like Him from among the nations - not from time past, nor the
present, and nor even in the future, there will be none like Him. Great in
character and powerful in might, He inspires fear among the nations. Anyone who
knows Him would fear Him and give Him the fear that is due to Him.
In verses 8-9, the prophet declared how stupid and foolish it was
for His people to deflect from honoring and worshipping Him to those dumb idols
of the pagan. Reiterating that they were made of wood and adorned with silver
and gold and crafted by man's skillful hands. No matter how well crafted they
were still made with hands and the works of man. How could they ever compare
with God their covenant LORD? Whereas,
the LORD, the only genuine God is
fearsome. He is the living and everlasting King. The earth trembles
and quakes at His wrath. When He is angry none on earth could bear
His indignation.
The true God is worthy of our worship and not the dumb idols. To
this God, we owe our reverential fear. Here are some tips to cultivate an
unreserved fear for our awesome God. Be grateful for all that He had done
by living a life of gratitude. Stay connected to Him by constantly feeding
on His Word. Daily cultivate an awareness of His presence in our
walk. Pray fervently that He will enhance our fear for Him. Cherish
His forgiveness and live the best way we know how to uphold His name which will
constantly reflect His character.
