Jeremiah 10:1-5 - God alone is worthy of our allegiance

God had chosen Israel and certainly Judah to be His unique people. For they were all descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. They were to be different from all the people of all other nations and were expected to only walk in the stipulated ways of God. At Mount Sinai after their deliverance from Egypt God made a covenant to be their LORD. As God’s Covenant people, they were not to imitate the Pagan in their practices. Besides they should not be like the pagan who was afraid and terrified by the “signs of heaven.” What God meant was that they must not be superstitious. Practicing them would only delude them.

Besides God assured them that the gods that the pagan worshiped were handmade and powerless. They were wood put together, decorated with silver and gold, and fastened with nails and hammers so that they would not fall. Besides they are likened to scarecrows made to scare away birds in the cucumber field. What’s pathetic was that they could not walk and had to be carried about. Hence God’s people should not fear them for they have no capacity to harm or hurt them.

It is ridiculous to worship man-made idols, yet foolishly people would venerate them and be driven into all kinds of superstitions. We have a true God who is genuine and worthy of our total allegiance. Don’t trade Him for something less. The very essence of God and His immutable character should make us want to worship Him and Him alone. Don’t settle for anything lesser. To believe that any other gods can save and deliver is pure delusion. It is foolhardy to embrace them.
