Whenever the influence of the Holy Spirit is experienced there would be renewal and revival. Here in these remaining five verses of Isaiah 32, we see how the desolate Jerusalem would be renewed. When God poured out His Spirit from on high the city would be radically changed. In place of barrenness, God gave them abundance. Tremendous blessings could be felt, and peace and prosperity restored. The wilderness would become a fertile field blooming with luxuriant trees again. Then there would be widespread justice and righteousness.
Justice would be exercised in the relationship between fellowmen, and righteousness would be encountered between man and God. The result of righteousness and justice would be peace, rest, and security. Blessings would be in abundance in agricultural prosperity. So prosperous would farmers be that they could allow their animals to feed freely from their crops.
What we see here is a description of a transformed community characterized by justice and righteousness of the Lord. It was brought about when God poured out His Spirit on them from on high. The outcome was a community that experienced peace, rest, and security. Dry and arid wilderness becoming fertile fields again speaks of renewal. Here we see the intention of God. He wants to give our barren life a great spiritual refreshment. He will bring it about by the outpouring of His Spirit. He wants us as a fellowship to be characterized by His justice and righteousness. He wants us to experience His abundance, rest in His goodness, live in His peace, and stay confident in Him. It happened on the day of Pentecost in the book of Acts. It happened in the Azusa streets revival at the turn of the 20thcentury. It happened in the Charismatic movement in the late ’60s into the ’80s. We are still feeling the rippling effect of those movements. Let us stay open to what God’s Spirit wants to do through us today.
