Psalm 119:145-152 – The Word of God connects us to Him

“Qoph,” is the nineteenth letter of the Hebrew Alphabets. The author chose to start Psalm 119:145-152 with this letter. The crux of this Psalm was the author’s deep yearning and desire to connect with God. It is obvious that he intensely prayed and supplicated with his whole heart. Not only was he earnest in his prayer but was also equally earnest in keeping God’s Word. It appears as if he was experiencing some sort of distress, hence his cry was for God to save him. He promised to keep God’s Word when he had been delivered. So earnest was his desire for a breakthrough that he was up praying before dawn broke, eagerly crying for help and waiting for God to fulfil His Word. Verse 147 gives us the impression that long before the day broke, he was looking forward to converse with God. His enthusiasm to pray was stirred up by his hope in God’s Word. Knowing the Word and yearning to pray are interwoven. Our confidence in what God had promised in His Word often stirs up our desire to draw near in prayer, so that we can experience them in reality.

Verse 148 tells us that not only did the Psalmist wake up early to pray but also stayed up late to muse and meditate on God’s Word. It could well be that in the stillness of the night it’s easier to cultivate attentiveness, because there would be less distractions. Recognizing that God is merciful, he asked for Him to hear his cry and to give him a new lease of life. We said earlier that the author was facing some kind of distress, now we see it in verse 150. His enemies, who had no regard for God’s Word, drew near with harmful intention. He refused to be cowed, he turned to the fact that God was near and was at hand to rescue him. What God had said and recorded in His Word are truth. He will never abandon us when we are deep in troubles. The Psalmist refused to entertain any doubt that He would. He had established long before that God’s Word is sure and His promises are certain. God never deviates from them and will never do so. God’s Word has been established upon His faithful character and it is full of integrity. We can trust Him to fulfill them. Absolutely.
