Paul had established that the Jews are not hopeless for there is a faithful
remnant. He now attempts to show that the rejection of the majority is not
permanent.
In God’s plan, He had used the rejection of the Jews to give the
Gentiles the opportunity to receive His blessing. Paul explained that the
blessings the Gentiles received, came as a result of the disobedience and
stubbornness of the Jews. He further reasoned that if the misfortune of
Israel’s rejection of God’s Messiah brought salvation and blessings to the
Gentiles, how much richer will the blessings be to the world when the Jews return
to the Lord. Through these verses, Paul gave assurance that a worldwide revival
and widespread spiritual life will come, once Israel is restored. They will
become a stimulant to the other nations. The difference will definitely be more
tremendous and dramatic.
Referring to his own ministry as an apostle to the Gentiles, he reasoned why his ministry did not conflict with God's purpose for the Jews. He knew that he was fulfilling a role in God's purpose and program. He was called to reach the Gentiles in order to provoke the Jews to jealousy and to return to the Lord.
In verses 17-24, Paul now turned to warn the Gentile believers of the
dangers of spiritual pride. He wanted them to remember where they came from and
to recall their spiritual heritage. The Gentiles cannot boast of a heritage of
their own. The Gentiles only enjoyed their privilege because of the
disobedience of the Jews. Here he also dealt with the issue of conceit. There
seems to be this mindset that says, “I am more special than the Jews now because God broke off His relationship with them to establish a new
relationship with me.” Paul wanted them to know that whatever happened to
Israel, can also happen to the Gentiles if they don’t persist in faith. This
fact, Paul said, should cause the Gentiles to view their position with awe
rather than conceit. The issue here is faith and it had got nothing to do with
the worth of the branch. In God’s estimate, whether natural or grafted
worthless branch, the importance is faith in Him.
The passage today teaches us to be conscious of God’s dealings with us.
We must not be proud but instead, be obedient to His guidance. Always remember the
instruments He had used to bring us to faith in Him. Do also remember those He
is using now to help us advance in our walk with Him. Be grateful and show
appreciation. Pride always comes before destruction. Never bite the hands that
feed you.
