Ammon, the son of Manasseh became king of Judah in his father’s place at age twenty-two. He reigned from Jerusalem and his mother Meshullemeth. Amon had a very short reign of only two years. Following in his father’s ways, he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. Like his father, Ammon served and worshipped idols. He departed from the way of the Lord, the God whom his forefathers had served.
Verses 24 tells us his servants conspired
against him and assassinated him in his own house. But the people of the land had
those assassins killed and made Josiah his son the king in his place. Verse 25 implied
that what he did was written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of
Judah. Like his father Manasseh, Ammon was buried in a garden, the garden of
Uzza.
It is
clearly said that Ammon walked in the evil ways of his father. This is a loaded description
of the life of Ammon. It reminds us of the English proverb, “like father like
son.” In these verses, we are only told
who his mother was but not what she had done to influence him. But we are told that
he certainly had walked in the evil ways of his father. This is by way of saying that he was influenced
by his father. This life of Ammon underscores for us the important role the
father plays in parenting. Parents, what we do as parents is important, especially
in how we honor and relate with God. What
our children will become hinges on the example we provide for them in the way we
conduct our lives. Let’s take our role responsibly, and be godly mothers and
fathers!
